the story

Nobody remembers exactly when we started calling ourselves the little grey men. It was somewhere between a joke about going grey and a joke about the other kind of little grey men — the ones who show up in blurry photos, keep to themselves, and are generally assumed to be up to something. It stuck because it was accurate on both counts.

We're a loose crew who mostly work, or used to work, somewhere in or around IT — systems, networks, hosting, the unglamorous plumbing that keeps everything else running. That's how most of us actually met: on servers, in shells, in the same small corners of the early internet that this whole family of domains grew out of. We've been playing games together, in one form or another, for about as long as we've known each other. At one point that meant a small, private Minecraft server running quietly on this domain — unremarkable to anyone but us, which was exactly the point.

the shadows part is on purpose

There isn't much to see here, and that's deliberate. We're not trying to build an audience or a brand. Most of what we actually do happens in private — a server kept running, a friend's DNS quietly fixed before they noticed it broke, a piece of infrastructure nudged back into shape. This domain is just a place to plant a flag for that: proof the little grey men were here, without saying much more than that.

We're older than we used to be. Greyer, too, literally in more than one case. That's fine. Someone still has to keep an eye on things.
